The National Child Helpline – 116

C-Semac-sema in 14th June 2013 launched a free telephone service available across all networks in United Republic of Tanzania that uses a short code 116. The service namely Child Helpline is for children in need of care and protection to voice their concerns to policy and decision-makers.

C-Sema has released a July-September 2016 report detailing findings in use of the helpline. Parents and guardians are advised to read the report to get the understanding of existing situation regarding children welfare; click here to access the report.

VMware Security Updates

VMware has released security updates to address a vulnerability in Horizon View.  Exploitation of this vulnerability may allow remote attacker to obtain the sensitive information.

Google Security Update for Chrome

Google has released Chrome version 53.0.2785.143 for Windows, Mac, and Linux. This update addresses vulnerabilities that could allow an attacker to take control of an affected system.

Yahoo Data Breach

yahoo-logoYahoo has confirmed a data breach that might have involved around 500 million yahoo user accounts. Yahoo announced on 22nd September 2016 that in 2014, a cyber-attack believed to be state sponsored which managed to obtain information of users including names, email addresses, telephone numbers, dates of birth, and hashed passwords. Hash password is a common method of storing normal passwords in the format that hides the original password.Users of Yahoo accounts are advised to immediately change their passwords and use more secured passwords.

  • Secured password is a password with at least 13 characters using a mix of letters, numbers and symbols.
  • Use different password for different accounts; do not reuse the password you have created anywhere else such as for your Facebook or email accounts.

OpenSSL Patches

OpenSSL has released update to patch various vulnerabilities. These updates address flaws that could potentially allow an attacker to cause a denial of service condition.

The following updates are available:

  • OpenSSL 1.1.0 users should upgrade to 1.1.0b
  • OpenSSL 1.0.2i users should upgrade to 1.0.2j
  • OpenSSL 1.0.1 users should upgrade to 1.0.1u
